Algorithmic Transparency as a Regulatory Panacea?

This event is designed to explore the regulatory challenges and incentives associated with “algorithmic transparency.” The notion of transparency has become a key point in recent regulatory frameworks for technology, often touted as a solution to concerns about accountability and oversight. However, the concept carries several interpretations, which can differ between legal, technological, and regulatory contexts—particularly within European fora. We will critically examine how transparency functions (or fails to function) in the real-world application of complex technologies such as AI and algorithms. This session will provide an opportunity for faculty, students, and other interested participants to engage in comparative discussions on how various regulatory environments address transparency, and how those environments impact research and practice in the field of technology regulation.
