An Introduction to state-of-the-art AI for Curious Lawyers

In this one hour talk Tom Dekan will give a basic explanation of how the latest AI technology works, focusing on large language models including recent releases such as Sonnet 3.7, OpenAI o3 mini, Grok 3, Deepseek R1. He will discuss some systems he has built using these platforms and what potential future applications he sees and how they will impact on legal practice. He will also discuss how he I would be use AI tools if he were a law student now.
About the Speaker: Tom Dekan did his LLM at LSE in 2015/16. He then left A&O Sherman to start building software for law firms. He has since then built and sold multiple products to law firms and launched a YouTube channel on software development and AI. He is currently working with Stackfix (an early stage startup in Holborn), building software and AI to automatically assess software.
