PIL Hub: ‘The Folk Concept of International Law’

The PIL hub lunch-time seminar series aims to provide an opportunity to discuss and debate leading research on contemporary, theoretical and historical issues of international law.
On 12th March 2026, Dr Daniel Peat will present a talk titled ‘The Folk Concept of International Law’. This session will take place in Moot Court Room, please see venue information below.
Recent work on experimental jurisprudence has explored whether the general public conceive law to be inherently linked to morality. In our study, we build on this work to develop the ‘folk concept’ of international law. We report the results of an experimental survey carried out on 6,000 respondents across six countries – Argentina, China, India, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the United States. The goal of the study is not to survey what people think about international law, but rather to better understand what they think international law actually is.
