The future of human rights in the UK

October 18, 2022 @ 5:30 pm

Convene events are organised for members of the LSE community.

Speakers: Dr Giulia Gentile (LSE) and Professor Conor Gearty (LSE)

Under the Conservative party’s leadership, the latest UK Governments have expressed the intention to reform the Human Rights Act 1998, which give effects to the European Convention of Human Rights in the UK. In June 2022, the UK Government introduced the Bill of Rights Bill with the view to repealing the Human Rights Act. Following the election of Liz Truss as the new UK Prime Minister, the Bill of Rights Bill has been shelved. Yet the future of the protection of human rights and the role of the European Convention in the UK remain uncertain. In this seminar, Professor Conor Gearty & Dr Giulia Gentile will discuss the landscape of protection of human rights in the UK and its potential developments.
