DESCRIPTION:This promises to be a unique event in which we have the opportunity of drawing on the experience of judges from several jurisdictions to reflect on certain challenges in the contemporary practice of judging. \nOur panel comprises: \nSir Tim Eicke\, who has recently completed his term as the British judge on the European Court of Human Rights \nJustice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court \nProfessor Kate O’Regan\, former Justice of the South Africa Constitutional Court \nThe panel will be moderated by Sir Ross Cranston\, former Justice of the High Court of England & Wales and author of the recently published book on Judging (OUP\, 2026). \nDrawing on his extensive experience\, Ross will be asking questions of the panel on such issues as appointments processes\, conflicts of interests\, collegial decisions and dissents\, case management and similar matters. DESCRIPTION:The US Constitution is the oldest and most intensely litigated modern constitution in the world\, and it has also spawned a most remarkable array of theories on how the Constitution should be interpreted. In this lecture\, LSE President Larry Kramer reflects on the issue of constitutional interpretation by focusing on one distinctive theory\, that of originalism. Originalism is a style of interpretation that claims that the Constitution has an original meaning which is gleaned from historical analysis and which trumps all other arguments for deciding what a constitutional provision means. Arguing that originalism is an incoherent theory\, Kramer explains how and why originalism has become an influential theory only since the 1950s. SUMMARY:Practising International Arbitration: Inter-State\, Investment\, and Commercial Disputes
DESCRIPTION:This seminar examines the three main forms of international arbitration from the practical perspective of one of the most prominent junior barristers active across inter-State\, investment\, and commercial disputes\, as well as arbitration-related and immunities litigation in the English courts. The seminar is primarily targeted to LLM students enrolled in LL4C6 Advanced Issues in International Arbitration\, but all LSE students are welcome to attend. \nSpeaker: Catherine Drummond is a barrister at Three Verulam Buildings with a diverse legal practice spanning public international law\, international arbitration\, commercial law\, and public law. She is regularly instructed in proceedings before the International Court of Justice\, the European Court of Human Rights\, various UN bodies\, and the English courts on complex issues of public international law. Her arbitration work includes both investor-State and commercial disputes\, with experience under ICSID\, ICC\, UNCITRAL\, and LCIA rules. She has also appeared before the High Court\, Court of Appeal\, and Supreme Court in matters related to arbitration\, including the enforcement of ICSID and New York Convention awards. How are resources allocated across crises\, contracts\, compliance\, strategy\, investigations\, and board-level issues? What does it really take to run a legal function that is expected to move fast\, stay credible\, and protect the enterprise\, often with limited resources and constant competing demands? \nWe will look at the General Counsel’s stakeholder universe. Few roles in a corporation are as interconnected. Both terms are used interchangeably and refer to technology-enabled financial services and products that are either novel\, or traditional and provided in structurally novel ways. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \n\nDiscussions about international trade typically focus on negotiations of tariffs and free trade agreements between states\, but ignore the daily movement and financing of  goods and services that cross borders every day.  What arrangements support the importation of fruit to our supermarkets? What arrangements support the payment of the multiple suppliers producing components of cars or smart phones?  How are the parties financed when there’s a gap in payment terms?  What about non-payment risk? What law and jurisdiction govern? \nUnknown to the majority of qualified lawyers\, there is a detailed private law system of rules and practice supporting import / export transactions\, including the cross-border provision of services.  This system remains obscure\, despite the value of global trade being at an all-time high of nearly $33 trillion in 2024. \nThis certificate Trade Finance Masterclass Series at LSE Law School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to: (1) the legal rules and industry practice governing cross border trade and trade finance; (2) the continued challenge transitioning global trade from a paper based system to digital; (3) the risks arising for international trade when deals are impacted by economic sanctions or fraud. \nThis course is open to students at the LSE studying Law or Law and finance. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \nThis certificate Master Class Series at LSE Law School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to regulatory issues arising in the sphere of ‘FinTech’ and ‘Digital Finance’. Both terms are used interchangeably and refer to technology-enabled financial services and products that are either novel\, or traditional and provided in structurally novel ways. FinTech and Digital Finance do not have an existence apart\, rather\, they are part of the continuously evolving financial market as it keeps developing. \nDiscussion on FinTech typically focusses on terms such as blockchain\, stablecoin\, CBDC\, robo-advice\, and mobile payment. However\, to really understand these developments and identify key structural trends they are best discussed by reference to a number of – wider – central themes\, notably regulatory arbitrage\, the increasing use of technology\, datafication\, and the convergence of financial services with other markets\, such as social media and e-commerce. \nOur Convene Master Class Series will break down these developments and set them into their regulatory and legal context. It complements academic study of the field by explaining knowledge of strategic considerations derived from years of experience in the field.
