SUMMARY:Live Broadcast of the ICJ’s Advisory Proceedings on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Come along to watch the live broadcast of the opening of the advisory proceedings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on climate change\, focused on the arguments of Vanuatu and Melanesian Spearhead Group. \nThe advisory opinion given by the Court after its two-week hearing is expected to set the agenda for general international law on climate change and energy transition\, above and beyond the diplomatic agenda of the climate COPs. \nStudents with an interest in international law\, oral advocacy\, and/or environmental issues are particularly encouraged to drop in at any time. \nBy way of background\, on 29 March 2023\, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution by consensus (A/RES/77/276)\, led by Vanuatu and over 100 co-sponsors on the original initiative of Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change. The UNGA thereby requested the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the following questions: \n\nWhat are the obligations of States under international law to ensure the protection of the climate system and other parts of the environment from anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for States and for present and future generations?\nWhat are the legal consequences under these obligations for States where they\, by their acts and omissions\, have caused significant harm to the climate system and other parts of the environment\, with respect to:\n\n(a) States\, including small island developing States (SIDS)\, which\, due to their geographical circumstances and level of development\, are injured or specially affected by\, or are particularly vulnerable to\, the adverse effects of climate change? \n(b) Peoples and individuals of the present and future generations affected by the adverse effects of climate change?

SUMMARY:FinTech and Digital Finance Masterclass – Session 3
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this course is designed for LLB & LLM students ONLY. \n\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\n\nCertificates will be provided to participants who attend all five Sessions. \nIt is mandatory for all participants to present their valid LSE ID cards upon arrival at each masterclass. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \nThis certificate Master Class Series at LSE Law School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to regulatory issues arising in the sphere of ‘FinTech’ and ‘Digital Finance’. Both terms are used interchangeably and refer to technology-enabled financial services and products that are either novel\, or traditional and provided in structurally novel ways. FinTech and Digital Finance do not have an existence apart\, rather\, they are part of the continuously evolving financial market as it keeps developing. \nDiscussion on FinTech typically focusses on terms such as blockchain\, stablecoin\, CBDC\, robo-advice\, and mobile payment. However\, to really understand these developments and identify key structural trends they are best discussed by reference to a number of – wider – central themes\, notably regulatory arbitrage\, the increasing use of technology\, datafication\, and the convergence of financial services with other markets\, such as social media and e-commerce. \nOur Convene Master Class Series will break down these developments and set them into their regulatory and legal context. It cuts across matters addressed in the curriculum at LSE Law School\, such as financial regulation and financial law\, commercial and corporate law\, data regulation and competition law. \nThis course is open exclusively to LLM and LLB students at LSE Law School. It is designed to be co-curricular (i.e.\, not part of the LLM or LLB curricula) and complement other relevant courses. \nStudents will earn a certificate for attending all sessions\, the course will not count as credit\, to put towards any degree\, nor will it be examinable. \nSpeakers: Philipp Paech\, Elisabeth Noble \n

SUMMARY:LSE Law Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:We have a wonderful day of cinema planned on Saturday 12 October\, and it’s all completely free (indeed we’ll even be giving away raffle prizes at each of our documentary film screenings)! \nWe are screening 10 films in total. Many are cutting-edge documentaries. We have a premiere (a film 16 years in the making\, with the director in attendance). We have two avant premieres (one of these is already sold out at the BFI London Film Festival – so you can only see it with us)! We have cinema classics. We even have an Irish “little gem” (we’ll have the director participating for that one as well – he was once a lawyer\, but saw the light 😉). \nAll our films are interactive opportunities. We’ll have directors\, producers\, experts and thoughtful commentators to lead post-film discussions. The festival website includes all sorts of information to allow you the fullest opportunity to select the films you want to see\, and also to expand your horizons as a result of attending our festival. \nTake a look through the programme and see what piques your curiosity. Make a plan\, grab some friends and come along. You can make a day of it or go to just one film. We are not charging admission (thanks to our generous donors)\, so make the most of it! \nVenue: Marshall Building\, Rooms MAR.2.04\, MAR.2.05 & MAR.2.06

SUMMARY:Sustainable Finance Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this course is designed for LLB & LLM students ONLY.\n   Register for the event \nLocation: MAR 2.04 Marshall Building\, London\, United Kingdom \nIt is mandatory for all participants  to present their valid LSE ID cards upon arrival at this masterclass. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \nWhat is sustainable finance? \n“ESG” – a term used to cover a wide range of vital topics\, including the climate emergency\, biodiversity loss\, human rights and DEI (diversity\, equity and inclusion) – is one of the most frequently discussed topics in finance.  Governments are looking to the private sector to play a significant part in achieving their public policy goals\, and financial institutions are now often criticised\, and increasingly challenged in the courts\, by a range of stakeholders – sometimes for doing too much\, and sometimes for not doing enough. \nThis masterclass session will look at Sustainable Finance policy and regulation in the leading jurisdictions.  We will consider why governments are seeking to regulate sustainable finance\, what they are trying to achieve\, and whether their policies are likely to be successful.  We will refer to key issues and key pieces of regulation both for financial market participants and for corporates. \nThe session will be led by:\nAlperen Gözlügöl\, Assistant Professor of Law\, LSE\nSimon Witney\, Visiting Professor in Practice\, LSE \nTo register for this event click here \nPlease note that this course is designed for LLB & LLM students ONLY

SUMMARY:Leadership Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event is only for LLB & LLM students. \nThis is a leadership class for aspiring lawyers and businesspeople. We will begin with the professional qualities that are non-negotiable for success in the business world. We will then turn to skills – sometimes labelled “soft” skills – that are actually both difficult and critical to master. These are skills rooted in perspective\, long-term thinking and development\, and empathy for others. These are ultimately the capabilities that separate admirable and memorable leaders from competent but uninspiring leaders. We’ll talk about the leadership challenges and opportunities that arise in large business organizations. And we’ll conclude with practical tips and strategies that will help students develop their own approach to professional growth and personal development over time\, whether their journeys lead them to the private sector (business and law)\, public sector\, academia\, or judiciary. \nSpeakers: Marie Oh Huber\, Former Chief Legal Counsel\, EBAY and Pierre Gentin\, Chief Legal Officer\, McKinsey \nChair: Prof. David Kershaw\, Dean of LSE Law School. \nThis event will be on a first-come first serve basis.

SUMMARY:Ambivalence in (un)certain times
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the devastating Israel-Gaza war\, Shani Orgad reflects on the ‘war on ambivalence’ in current discourse and how the insistent discourse of either/or is geared towards humiliation. Instead\, Orgad explores the potential value of ambivalence: rather that a deficit of certainty or a failure of definitive thinking\, ambivalence is proposed as a critical sensibility for our (un)certain times; a way of thinking and feeling for engaging our intellectual and political investments in academia\, in the classroom\, in our research\, and beyond. \nThis event will be held on Thursday 7th of March from 17:30 – 19:00 in the Student Common Room. \nSpeaker: Professor Shani Orgad \nChair: Professor Charles Stafford \nThis event will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.
