The origins of intellectual property law as an academic subject

28 September @ 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The inaugural Cornish Intellectual Property Law Colloquium – a discussion of the legacy of the late Professor Bill Cornish.

About this event

Often described as the progenitor of Intellectual Property Law teaching and scholarship in the UK, Prof Cornish spent nearly 30 years at the LSE between 1962 and 1990 before becoming the inaugural Hershel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law at Cambridge.

At LSE Prof Cornish developed and taught the first postgraduate course in Intellectual Property Law at a UK university, putting the subject on the curriculum and forging the template for many others. In time, this played a major role in the formation of Intellectual Property as a legal academic subject both at the LSE and, more broadly, in UK Higher Education. It is not an exaggeration to say that Prof Cornish’s innovative teaching and scholarship helped shape the field of Intellectual Property Law into the thriving academic space it is today.

This event will feature an esteemed line-up of panellists who will reflect upon his legacy in the context of the current state of intellectual property law teaching and scholarship in the UK.

The event organisers wish to offer special thanks to Mrs Lovedy Cornish for permitting us to inaugurate a series of LSE events in Bill Cornish’s honour.

The event will be followed by a wine reception.
